I liked this movie because it didn't show any signs of Hollywood anywhere, and suited the setting of the Ozark mountains. Imagine being 17-year-old Ree Dolly, having to take care of a mentally disabled mother and two younger siblings, in search of a missing father who seemed to have left you and your family in a serious case of shortage and poverty. What's the best thing you can do? Well you don't join the army, but you go and find out what in the world happened to your missing and irresponsible father.
Winter's Bone kind of reminded me of Winter Passing (the one film with Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell), the one film I watched around the same time of the year last year on Christmas Break. The snowy, winter-y serene scenes of Winter's Bone took me back to the scenes where Reese from Winter Passing, returns to Michigan and discovers new facts about herself and others.
